When you talk with Ty Spinks, sales manager for DR Horton in Oklahoma City, it’s clear that his focus stretches far beyond houses. Yes, he oversees sales for the nation’s largest homebuilder in a fast-growing metro area, but what drives him most is something deeper: people.
“I think my favorite thing to do in this position as sales manager is just help grow people,” Ty explains. “It may sound cliché, but the stronger we develop our team—whether in sales, warranty, or construction—the better service and experience we can provide for our customers. That ultimately builds trust and satisfaction, which is our true goal.”
A Journey Through DR Horton
Ty’s career with DR Horton spans nearly seven years and multiple regions. He started in the construction department in Fort Worth, learning the hands-on details of building homes. After a few years, he transitioned into sales, then earned a promotion to sales manager in Midland, Texas. Just six months ago, he moved to Oklahoma City to lead sales operations here.
Each move has been a new adventure for Ty and his family, but he’s quick to credit his wife, Anika, for her unwavering support. “She’s been a trooper,” he says with a smile. “She’s moved with me from Fort Worth to Midland and now to Oklahoma City, all while being a great partner, wife, and mom to our one-year-old daughter.”
What Makes DR Horton Stand Out
So what sets DR Horton apart in a crowded housing market? Ty sums it up in one word: value.
“For us, it’s about providing the best grade of construction materials, building on efficient timelines so families can move in quickly, and offering incentives that truly make a difference,” he says. “When you put all of that together, you have the best overall value in the market.”
That value shows up in both pricing and design. Most DR Horton homes in the Oklahoma City area range between $219,000 and $280,000, though the company also builds higher-end options up to the $400,000s in Edmond. Their strategy is simple but powerful: create homes that appeal to the majority of buyers, combining affordability with quality features.
“We spend a lot of hours selecting the right products and energy efficiencies,” Ty explains. “Even though our homes may be smaller than custom builds, we use many of the same standards. It’s about making a home that’s efficient, affordable, and appealing to the most people possible.”
Serving Communities Across the Metro
DR Horton’s footprint in Oklahoma City is wide and expanding. Current communities range from Edmond to Norman, stretching west into Mustang, Yukon, and Piedmont, with future growth planned in Newcastle, Tuttle, Choctaw, Shawnee, and Guthrie.
“Our goal is to be present in the communities where people want to live,” Ty says. “Whether that’s a young family buying their first home in Moore, or someone moving up in Edmond, we want to make sure we’re providing options that fit a wide range of needs.”
Life Beyond Real Estate
While real estate takes much of his focus, Ty and his family share a passion that might surprise some—horses. Both Ty and Anika grew up immersed in the horse world, and today they are heavily involved in Morgan horse competitions.
“Oklahoma City actually feels like home in that sense, because it’s such a hub for equestrian events,” Ty says. “We’ve been coming here for years for the Morgan Horse Nationals and Worlds. Now, being here full-time, we get to enjoy it as part of our lifestyle.”
Anika competes in dressage and western pleasure riding, while Ty has been connected to the horse community his whole life. For their young daughter, it seems only natural that the family’s passion will eventually be passed down.
A Culture of Encouragement
Ask Ty what he hopes people remember about working with him and his team, and his answer circles back to culture.
“The culture my boss, Jenny Meyer, is helping us build here is all about family,” he says. “I believe if you take care of people, they’ll take care of you. When our division feels like a family, our team takes that same care into their work with customers.”
One of Ty’s leadership inspirations is David Novak, former CEO of Yum! Brands, who often spoke about the power of encouraging and praising people. Ty applies that same philosophy to his leadership style at DR Horton.
“Encouragement builds a stronger culture,” he says. “And a strong culture translates directly into the customer’s experience. That’s the kind of reputation we want to build here in Oklahoma City.”
The DR Horton Difference
For Ty Spinks and his team, building homes in Oklahoma City isn’t just about brick and mortar. It’s about building trust, developing people, and shaping communities where families can thrive.
“Our vision goes beyond the sale,” Ty says. “At the end of the day, it’s about creating value—for our buyers, our team, and the communities we serve.”
