When you talk with Azure LaMons Herrera, it’s easy to see her passion for her profession. When she entered the world of real estate, it wasn’t just a career change—it was a continuation of her lifelong passion for connecting with people and making a difference.
As a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty Elite in Oklahoma City, Azure blends her extensive background in social services with her love for homes, architecture, preservation and community.
The Transition from Social Services to Real Estate
Azure’s career didn’t begin in real estate; in fact, her professional roots are deeply embedded in the social services and non-profit sector. For years, she dedicated herself to helping others, which provided her with invaluable experience in navigating complex human emotions and situations. But in 2015, when she became a mother, her life took a new turn.
“My mom, Cynthia Tucker Brooks, was an agent, and in 2015, I became a mom myself. My mom and I started flipping houses together,” Azure recalls. “It was a perfect fit for me as I could bring my baby along, work, and be a mom at the same time. We bought urban core/vintage homes, and my mom was the listing agent. As time went on, she decided she wanted to retire and encouraged me to get my real estate license.”
This natural progression from flipping homes to becoming a REALTOR® was a seamless transition for Azure. With her social media presence from her flipping projects and her years of exposure to real estate through her mom, she was already known in certain circles. Yet, despite her familiarity with the industry, Azure admits she was still hesitant about whether she could make the switch.
“I had been watching my mom work in real estate since I was in middle school, and I had a lot of respect for the work. But I worried I would lose that part of my heart that got fed from my time in social services. I feared I wouldn’t feel as fulfilled,” she explains. “But it turned out to be the opposite. The work I do with clients now is incredibly rewarding. I can still make a meaningful impact, just in a different way.”
A Personal Approach to Real Estate
Today, Azure describes her real estate work as much more than just transactions. For her, it’s about connecting with people on a personal level and offering them more than just a place to live—she’s helping them find the foundation for their memories. “I like to think of myself as an emotional support REALTOR®,” she says with a smile. “When you’re talking about where someone is going to build the memories of their lives, it’s not just business. It’s a personal connection, and I get to help them honor a house that’s been someone’s home for years, sometimes even decades.”
Azure’s work isn’t measured by traditional sales volume but by the relationships she builds and the satisfaction of her clients. “I don’t set my goals based on sales numbers or volume. But I was proud to have the highest number of transactions at my previous brokerage, Cherrywood, a couple of years ago,” she shares. “It’s not about the quantity, it’s about the quality and depth of the relationships. I want clients shopping in any budget to get the same customer service from me.”
Family & Free Time
Outside of her career, Azure is a dedicated wife and mother. She and her husband, Eric, are raising two young sons, Ender, 9, and Dresden, 6, both of whom are on the autism spectrum. “Being a parent is a huge part of my life. Both boys are in Cub Scouts,” Azure says. “I’m also a huge theatre nerd, and I love going to watch performances whenever I can.”
Her family provides a solid foundation for her work, and she values the balance between family life and her professional commitments. “As a mom, I get to help people find homes where they will build their own memories, just like I’m doing with my family. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to connect with people in this way.”
Advocacy and Giving Back
Azure’s commitment to her community extends beyond her work as a REALTOR®. She is actively involved in organizations that support both her professional network and causes close to her heart. This year, she joined the Board of Directors for the Oklahoma LGBTQ Real Estate Alliance, having previously served as their Pride Chair. In addition, she’s on the Government Affairs Committee & Homeless Initiative Subcommittee for OKMAR (Oklahoma City Metro Association of REALTORS®).
“I’m passionate about supporting the LGBTQ community and advocating for inclusion in real estate. It’s important to me to be involved in organizations that promote acceptance and equality,” Azure explains. “Being part of the Oklahoma LGBTQ Real Estate Alliance and the Homeless Initiative allows me to be an advocate and contribute to positive change in our community. Fair housing, free of discrimination, should belong to everyone.”
Real Estate with a Purpose
For Azure, real estate isn’t just a career—it’s a way to honor the history of her community and make a meaningful impact. Growing up in Crown Heights, a Historic Preservation Neighborhood in Oklahoma City, Azure learned the importance of preserving the past for future generations. “My mom taught me that the historic homes we lived in weren’t really ours; we were just stewards taking care of them for the people who would come after us,” she says.
This mindset has influenced her work today. Azure is particularly passionate about vintage and historic homes in Oklahoma City, and she loves educating her clients about the history of the houses they are buying. “I love educating people about the homes they are purchasing and how these buildings are connected to our community’s history,” she says. “There’s so much history in these homes, and I love helping others appreciate the stories behind them. It’s the closest thing to time travel I’ll ever get to experience.”
Advice for New REALTORS®
Azure’s advice to new agents is simple but powerful: “Focus on serving your clients with creativity and dedication. I remember my first year in real estate, I held an open house at a mid-century time capsule home. I dressed up in an I Love Lucy-style outfit from that era, served mocktails, played music of the era, and it was a huge success,” she recalls. “It’s about thinking outside the box and being creative, while always putting your clients’ needs first.”
Day by day, Azure LaMons Herrera remains committed to the idea that real estate is about much more than buying and selling homes. It’s about connecting with people, honoring the past, and building a future where everyone has a place to call home.
